MELAMINE

Melamine (C₃H₆N₆) for Intumescent Flame Retardants – Product Specification

1. Product Overview

Chemical Name: Melamine (1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triamine)
CAS No.: 108-78-1
Application: Key component in intumescent flame retardant (IFR) systems for polymers, coatings, and textiles.
Function: Acts as a blowing agent and nitrogen source, promoting char formation and gas release to suppress combustion.

3.Key Properties for Flame Retardancy

Property

Value/Description

Decomposition Temp.

~350°C (releases NH₃, CO₂, and H₂O gases)

Nitrogen Content

66.6% (highly effective for gas-phase flame inhibition)

Synergistic Use

Combined with acid sources (e.g., ammonium polyphosphate) and char-forming agents (e.g., pentaerythritol).

Char Expansion

Forms a porous, insulating carbonaceous layer under heat, blocking oxygen and heat transfer.

4.Advantages in Intumescent Systems

Eco-Friendly: Halogen-free, low smoke, and low toxicity.

High Efficiency: Low loading required (typically 10–30% wt. in polymer matrices).

Thermal Stability: Compatible with processing temperatures up to 300°C.

Versatility: Suitable for polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polyurethane (PU), epoxy resins, and coatings.

5.Typical Formulations

Example IFR System:

Melamine: 20–30% (blowing agent)

Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP): 50–60% (acid source)

Pentaerythritol (PER): 10–20% (carbonization agent)
Performance:

UL-94 Rating: V-0 to V-1 (self-extinguishing).

LOI (Limiting Oxygen Index): >28% (significantly reduces flammability).

6.Application Guidelines

Polymer Compounding:

Pre-dry melamine (2–4 hours at 80°C) to avoid moisture interference.

Mix with APP and PER in a twin-screw extruder (processing temp. 180–220°C).

Optimize dispersion for uniform char formation.

Coatings:

Blend with epoxy/polyester resins and fillers (e.g., TiO₂).

Apply via spraying or brushing; cure at 150–200°C

7.. Safety & Compliance

Handling: Use PPE (gloves, goggles) to avoid dust inhalation.

Storage: Keep in a dry, cool place (<30°C) away from acids.

Regulatory: Complies with REACH, RoHS, and IEC 60754-1 (low halogen).

8. Packaging

Standard: 25 kg woven bags with moisture-resistant lining.

Custom: Available in bulk or tailored packaging.
